The Rule of ThirdsRule of Thirds

The “rule of thirds” is a technique that makes the photo look more professional and aesthetically pleasing. As you can see on the photos, the rule of thirds is about dividing the photo into nine equally big boxes (3×3).Then try to place the objects on the lines. Here the horizon is placed on a line and so is the sun.
This is a good way to organize your picture in the beginning, until you know enough to be able to break the rules.

Framing a PhotoNot Framing a photo

Sometimes it could help to use your surroundings as a frame to make a more interesting composition. Tree leaves are the most common and easiest way of using this technique.  Compare the pictures below to see what you prefer.

Hi Shannyn, Im pretty sure that the green is just natural, it might have been raining before the photo was taken this usually brings out the colors a bit more. It looks like if I compare the photo to the original that I’ve used the marquee tool in photoshop to make a selection of the stem (the frame) and then probably used Select—Modify—Feather or Smooth to smooth the selection and then played around with brightness, levels or curves to make the frame brighter (these you find in the “create new fill or adjustment layer”) Hope this answered your question! Have a good day!

That picture of the tree is amazing, can you tell me how you did it?
How did you make the green so vibrant? And was that frame done in photoshop or how did you make it so clear without destroying the background?
    Cheers

Yes you may use the sunset image. I think it was taken in 2007 on a trip to Gotland (an island outside Sweden).
Good luck with your photo video project and please feel free to share your final creations with us at photographyforbeginners.net

Hello, could I possibly use that picture of the sunset showing rule of thirds for my photo video project? If so could you tell me where and when the picture was taken ?
