Hi!
I am just getting into photography and I would like to know what type or camera i should start out with. My budget is $350. If you have any suggestions of what I should get, that would be great!
Thanks
I’m a professional (journalist) photographer who has taken photos you may even remember seeing. People always ask, when admiring a photo, what sort of camera I use; my standard response is that buying a Steinway Concert Grand will not guarantee a gig at Carnegie Hall. Reading magazines and checking online is a good start – depending upon what sort of photography you want to pursue; and if you have a photo dealer you trust someone who doesn’t simply want to sell you the model that makes him/her the most profit – ask lots of questions, handle the camera, check the controls and the “feel,” and make sure it’s for you. A press colleague on a Presidential trip to Hawaii bought an Instamatic from a beach vendor and shot a widely-used photo of George H. W. Bush in the surf. Good photography begins between the ears; the camera is just a tool. A good book, “Picture This!’ by Gary Haynes is still available from Amazon. $40 in 2006, it’s now about $5 – full of photo tips and 200+ terrific and inspiring photos.
It’s not easy to suggest which camera somebody else should go for since this is a pretty personal stage. My best suggestion to you is to go in to your local camera shop and ask the sales person to explain the different quality and functions in different branded cameras, and try them out in the shop. This will give you a good idea on which camera suit your needs the best.
Good Luck!
Hi i am planning to buy a beginners professional camera as photography is my latest venture and my budget is 30000 INR. Can you suggest me which camera i should buy. request you to revert on my mail id as above.
Might any person inform me which high-end camera model might possibly be recommended to capture moving items? I will be planning to take mammals in wildlife.
A compact camera has shutterspeed and apperture built into them but you don’t have the possibility to change the settings of it, for this you need a SLR Camera, but you can find a SLR for under a 1000. The usual price for a SLR Camera I would say is around 400 pounds, but after christmas and other big sale periods theese prices can drop to a very decent amount. Good luck with your photography!
Hello,
I am recently becoming more in depth in photography. I’m wondering if i can do the things with adjusting the shutter speed and what not with just a “standard” digital camera, or do i need to go purchase one of those one for over 1k to be able to start practicing?
Thank you,
Aimee
Hi, it sounds like fun! The software I would like to recommend you with is photoshop. Photoshop is the photographers best friend, according to my opinion, a programme full with different options and very easy to use. If you are a student, Adobe will give you a great student discount. Good Luck! And feel free to come back to us with your pics to show off..
Hi,
I’ve just starting taking up photography as a hobby and I’m looking for good software to use. I want to make photos into artwork and do lots of creative things with them. Can you recommend any software that would be suitable for this?
I just purchased a new Canon Rebel T1i, and I’m still figuring out how to work it. I was into photography with my little Canon point and shoot, and wanted to upgrade to a DSLR.
My Canon has everything I need and more, but I’m just wondering some of the basics for really good scenery photography. I’m reading into a lot of websites about all the different settings, but its a little overwhelming
What would you suggest to get started with?
Thanks!
Hello,
I’m in the market for a new DSLR camera and I’m confused on what to get. I love taking pictures of anything and everything. I want a camera and lens that I am able to sit in the audience and take beautiful pictures of my boys in their plays/programs. And I also want to be albe to sit in the stands and take great pictures of my boys playing their favorite sport. What do you suggest???
Thanks a lot!!!
Hi
Glad you’re happy with what you’ve learnt at Photography For Beginners.
The best advice I can give you is to go to your local camera shop and have a go yourself to realize whats important to you.
Important facts to include when buying a camera is
How many mega pixels it has for good picture quality
How important is the zoom to your photography? If it is- then you should probably consider an optical zoom over a digital zoom.
Good Battery Life
Good luck with your photography! And feel free to share your top photographs taken with your new camera.
Hi mate!
Your site is really really cool and as a begineer i learnt the basics quiet well.
I planned to buy a new P&S advanced digital camera. And my budget is 400$. Please list out few cameras which is worth to buy.
Thanks in advance. Keep up the good work.
Like with everything else, the better equipment you’ve got, the more options you’ll have. You can still start taking photos with a normal camera, even a disposable camera will have the opportunity to achieve interesting and beautiful images, it all depends on the photographer…
A digital camera can still be a SLR camera, SLR stands for Single Lens Reflex. I would advice you to go for a digital camera if you are a beginner, this gives you the opportunity to play around with the equipment without spending lots of money on film.
Good Luck
I am very much interested in nature and wildlife photography. But still i dont have a camera which suits that. Some say only a SLR camera is best for this.Which is the best one,a digital camera or a SLR camera?
AV is short for Aperture Priority and should be used when the aperture is the important factor for the final photo. If you set your camera on M as in Manual you will need to keep changing your setting every time the light change slightly, but if you’ve got it set on AV you start deciding which aperture you want for that particular type of shot and then the camera changes the shutter speed for you every time the light changes.
When to us AV:
When you want to achieve a great or a shallow depth of field.
You would want a great depth of field (high no. aperture) in a photo where there’s more than one object at different distances from the lens and you want them both to be in focus. You would want a shallow depth of field when you shoot for example a flower and you want the background to be out of focus.
Hope that answered the question.
Hi wondering if anyone could help me? My camera has a button saying AV and my question is: When am I suppose to use AV?
Hi Bobby
If I understand your problem right; you are finding it hard to decide what to shoot and how to shoot it.
This is a very personal question, it will all depend on your taste and preferences. The best way to get inspired is to look at other photographers work, then it will all become clear to you, and you will start seeing objects in your surrounding that you wouldn’t have noticed otherwise.
You can also read about the most common compositions to find out how to shoot your objects http://www.photographyforbeginners.net/photo-exercises/composition
I am 19 and ive passes my gcse in photography
i have a canon SLR. I want to focus on a paticular subject but not to sure also how shall i go about taking the pictures. i have full knowledge of how my camera works jus not too sure how to find the right subject.

Hi Randi
It all depends on how experienced your friend is. My suggestion to you is to get him a subscription of a photography magazine. A magazine will both teach and inspire your friend to develop his/her photography interest.
Go to your local news agency and have a flick to see which one you prefer the look of.
If you live in the UK:
Digital Photo and Photography Monthly are good magazines to learn more about photography.
If you want arty magazines that will only inspire have a look at for example Hotshoe or Soura.
Hope this helps
Kind Regards
Karolin
Hello,
I have a friend who is interested in photography. His birthday is coming up and would like to support this new hobby. He currently owns a digital zoom lense camera. Do you have any suggestions of books or videos I can gift wrap for him?
Thanks
